Mange forskjellige verb er etterfulgt av, eller kan etterfølges av, et andre verb i infinitiven. Alle verbene som er oppført på denne siden er etterfulgt av en to-infinitiv når infinitiven er brukt. De verbene som er markert med en asterisk, kan etterfølges av en that-bisetning, som du kan se i eksemplene. De verbene som er markert med to asterisker kan etterfølges av en that-bisetning kun når hovedverbets subjekt er "it".

Verb uten et substantiv foran that-bisetningen
Når visse verb er etterfulgt av en that-bisetning, bruker vi ingen substantiv foran that-bisetningen, selv om det er et substantiv foran infinitiven. Dette gjelder verbene command, direct, entreat, implore, order, require og trust.
Eksempler
- I trust you to tell the truth.
- I trust that you are telling the truth.
- The general commanded his men to surrender.
- The general commanded that his men surrender.
Verb med et substantiv foran that-bisetningen
Andre verb, når de er etterfulgt av en that-bisetning, krever et substantiv foran that-bisetningen, på samme måte som infinitiven. Dette gjelder verbene persuade og remind.

- You can't persuade people to buy small cars.
- You can't persuade people that small cars are better.
- He reminded me to take my notebook to school.
- He reminded me that I would need my notebook.
Verb med et valgfritt substantiv foran that-bisetningen
Det finnes en siste gruppe av verb, som tar et valgfritt substantiv foran that-bisetningen, når de er etterfulgt av en that-bisetning. Dette gjelder verbene instruct, teach og warn.

Å bruke "to dare"
I nektende og spørrende setninger kan vi bruke infinitiven med eller uten 'to', så lenge begge verbene har det samme subjektet, men det er vanligere å utelate 'to'. Hvis verbene har forskjellige subjekter, må du inkludere 'to'.
